What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin treatment that uses tiny needles to create tiny punctures in the skin to stimulate collagen and elastin production. Microneedling is also known as percutaneous collagen induction therapy. It's performed with a handheld device that has a pen or drum shape and is powered by electricity. This process helps the skin repair itself, stimulating collagen production which can help to improve skin elasticity, firmness, and hydration.  This can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin texture, resulting in a more youthful-looking complexion. Other benefits include reducing scar tissue, acne or other scars, decreasing age spots and hyperpigmentation, and enhanced product absorption.

What is Nanoneedling?

Nanoneedling is very similar to Microneedling but it uses slightly smaller hairlike needles to penetrate the top layer of skin. It can be used in more sensitive areas, such as under the eyes, to remove puffiness, decrease darkness, and firm skin.

Does Microneedling really work?

The before and after images speak for themselves but in addition, studies have shown dramatic statistically significant results in the dermal production of collagen and elastin. In one study, 35 subjects received 4 Microneedling treatments over the face and neck at the interval of one a month. Data was collected after each visit and 3 months post treatment using high resolution ultrasonography and optical coherence tomography and biopsy. Results found that facial dermal and epidermal density increased 101.86% and 19.28%, respectively. Facial elasticity increased 28.2% from baseline at 3 months posttreatment. Relative collagen type III and elastin gene expression was statistically higher 3 months posttreatment. These results illustrate the efficacy of Microneedling suggesting skin rejuvenation as well as new extracellular matrix production and muscle formation. (1)

Scar treatment has become a big area of treatment for Microneedling. From acne scars to surgery to stretch marks. A study of120 patients with facial and nonfacial scars from a variety of etiologic sources (acne, trauma, surgery) were treated using microneedling with no other additional treatments (topical or intralesional). Patients received one to six consecutive monthly microneedling treatments. The scars were rated for clinical improvement 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment on a five-point scale. All scars improved at least 50 percent after an average of 2.5 treatments. Over 80 percent of patients had 50 to 75 percent improvement, and 65 percent of patients demonstrated over 75 percent improvement. This study supports the use of microneedling for various facial and nonfacial scars across a broad range of skin phototypes with minimal risk of adverse effects. (2)

What to expect during a treatment and recovery time

A Microneedling session is typically a 30 minute procedure. The Microneedle is gently rolled over the skin at a depth of about 0.25mm to 1.5mm depending on the individual skin type and concerns. It is relatively pain free with the possibility of slight discomfort. Often, serums that stimulate cellular rejuvenation, such as apple stem cells, are applied. There is usually no bleeding or pain after although redness may occur for some sensitive skin types, and can last 24 to 48 hours after but with a significant decrease a couple hours after the procedure. After care consists of no facial products, including makeup and facial cleaner, for 24 hours after the session but then a normal routine can be resumed. Plain water wash can and should be applied often for hydration. Microneedling can only be done once a month in order to ensure complete healing time and regeneration of the skin. Results are usually noticed about 2 weeks after the session and typically 3 to 6 sessions are needed for the complete desired effects.

Nanoneedling is also about a 30-minute procedure but it has little to no recovery time and can be done on a weekly basis as an exfoliating treatment.

As with any procedure requiring needles, It is important to do this treatment with a trained professional to ensure proper technique and use of sterile equipment. You can find more information about Microneedling and myself at my website invibewell.com
